Dental SealantsDental Sealants, Dental Crowns, and More: How Pediatric Dentists Help

You share almost everything with your child, including your home, your food, and your car. Should you share your dentist too?

A family dentist could take care of mouths large and small. But pediatric dentists can tackle some specialty care that might baffle your doctor.

Defend Against Cavities with Dental Sealants

Dental sealants can reduce the risk of cavities by 80 percent, and your child can get them as soon as adult teeth appear.

Your dentist will:

  • Clean the teeth.
  • Apply a gel to roughen and clean the surface.
  • Rinse and dry the tooth.
  • Apply the sealant.
  • Use a blue light to harden the sealant.

Adults can get sealants too, but since you already have all of your adult teeth, you only need one visit to do the work. Children get adult teeth periodically, and pediatric dentists are adept at timing appointments to get each vulnerable tooth when it appears.

At Miller Pediatric Dentistry & Orthodontics, we’re also skilled in keeping children calm and comfortable during these appointments. Some dentists who work only with adults don’t have that experience.

Address Cavities with Dental Crowns

Despite appropriate dental care, some kids get cavities. In fact, about 20 percent of children ages 5 to 11 have at least one cavity left untreated.

Pediatric dentists can use fillings to amend some tooth problems. But in serious cases, your child may need dental crowns.

Pediatric dentists like ours know how to both fit and shape crowns on tiny mouths. Solving problems early helps a child avoid smile problems later in life.

Improve the Smile with Invisalign

Your child’s path to rows of straight teeth can begin as soon as adult teeth appear. This so-called Phase 1 treatment is tricky, as a child has a mixture of adult and baby teeth. Pediatric dentists like ours can use Invisalign to help.

Our Invisalign First program is made for children ages 6 through 10. We use clear, plastic trays to help adjust your child’s teeth and amend the jaw as needed.
