Routine dental care

What Is Considered Routine Dental Care?

Think of routine dental care as preventive medicine for your child’s mouth. These visits, which take place even when your child feels healthy, can help your doctor spot problems when they’re minor and easy to treat. Treatments included in routine visits can help your dentist prevent other issues from even starting.

What Is Routine Dental Care?

Any visit to the dentist you make without a specific plan in mind is a routine visit. Don’t bother with terminology or get frazzled about routine dental care vs. basic dental care. Just know that visiting your doctor regularly for assessments and treatment is an important part of your child’s dental health.

During a routine visit, your child’s dentist will:

Assess. The dentist will look over your child’s mouth and use x-rays to see in between the teeth and the structures below the gum line and bone. From there the dentist will formulate a treatment plan with your child in mind.

Clean. Dental hygienists scrape away plaque and debris. They can polish teeth too. A recommended fluoride application will be applied at the end of the appointment as well.

Treat. After the exam and X-rays are completed your child’s dentist will review with you the recommended treatment plan.

Routine dental care visits also allow you to ask your doctor about your at-home routine. Perhaps you need a touchup on brushing techniques, or you aren’t sure if you’re using the right floss. Your dentist can answer your questions.

What’s the Best Dental Care Routine?

Every child is different. For the majority of children, check ups and cleanings are recommended once every 6 months or twice a year. During the examination your dentist will set a schedule that’s right for your child.
